Beef Cattle Industry Development Fund Guidelines for Research Funding

The following guidelines have been prepared to assist research institutions to prepare research projects for funding by BCID Fund.

The Cattle Industry Development Council recognizes that preparing a good research project takes both time and money without any assurances that the project might be approved for funding. To assist in the process, CIDC will now accept a letter of intent as the first stage in considering an application for funding assistance. If CIDC accepts the letter of intent, it will provide approval in principle for the project and invite the applicant to submit a more detailed application for funding for evaluation and assessment and final approval. Approval of the letter of intent does not ensure research funding. Final approval lies with the Cattle Industry Development Council.

1. Letter of Intent

A letter of intent may be the first step in the application process and is to include the following:

• Title of the project.
• Names and addresses of the principle investigator and all co-investigators, including contact information.
• Description of the project - hypothesis and objectives/goals, expected timelines and methods required to evaluate the hypothesis.
• Anticipated benefits to the BC beef cattle industry.
• Detailed references of other related research work of the principle investigators.

Step two would follow the approval of the Letter of Intent. The agency involved would be invited to submit a completed research proposal. The following guidelines are to be used when submitting this complete proposal:

• Title of Project
• Names of principle research and all other researchers by agency that will be involved in this project.
• Principle investigator's biographical data (education, professional experience, research activities related to this application, and reference to relevant articles in research journals, or published in the last three years
• Approval of application by head of agency applying for funds
• Background and objectives of the proposal
• Expected benefits of the research to the BC beef industry
• Technology transfer plan
• Ownership of intellectual property
• Research plan
• Annual action plan
• Related research performed in your agencies and in other agencies and a list of references.
• Capital assets required, costs and reasons for this expenditure
• Supplies and services and travel (include computer costs)
• Publication costs if any
• Contract personnel required
• Budget and manpower requirements by year and total
• Overhead costs
• Other sources of funding by name of funding agency and amount that is included in this application.
• List of three qualified persons who may be asked to carry out a peer review of this application.

• Evaluation and assessment of applications may include peer reviewing prior to final consideration by the Cattle Industry Development Council. All applications will be considered on their scientific merit, and current research priorities of the BC beef industry.
• Projects should not be longer than three or four years' duration.
• Research work carried out in BC will be given priority; however, work carried out in other locations in Canada will be accepted.
• Projects are encouraged to include financial support from the private sector.
• Capital costs are not eligible for funding from the BCID Fund.
• Overhead costs are limited to 10% of total project costs.
• Other arrangements must be negotiated with CIDC.
• Progress reports are required before additional installments of funds are released.
• A final report submitted to CIDC at the completion or termination of the research project is a condition of support from the BCID Fund. In this regard a holdback of 15% will be made until the final report is received.
• Ownership of intellectual property must be negotiated with CIDC.
